More likely the blame lies with my own weary faculties, my own misfiring synapses. It could be seen as a fault in the design, that these hidden pathways were so resistant to yield. There were times that my rhythmic explorations were interrupted, that my pace was halted by some particularly tricky section of the game. I’m hard-pressed to find anything truly negative to say about this game. “I wish that this was an actual storybook, a heavy thing bound in leather and built from parchment.” Every passage through these places will reveal a little more, another curious detail, a new aspect hidden in the art. You would be forgiven for indulging in multiple, even repeated, playthroughs of Gorogoa. A scant two hours isn’t nearly enough time to spend in this place. The only grievance I have with the story, with the whole game, is that I wish it was a little longer. Every aspect of the story relies on your personal interpretation of the cascading images that make up the game.

The full scope of the narrative requires no words to convey itself, in fact, offers no words at all. Learning the scope of the story was merely an extra note of satisfaction in my overall experience. No, I was content to be caught in the breathless yet careful pace, swept along until the end. This wasn’t information I was seeking out, however. It wasn’t until three-quarters of the way through the game that I was able to pinpoint how many worlds were being played with. A malevolent force seeks to ruin each of these worlds, with only you to prevent this from happening.

How to describe the story? Five worlds intersect, mirrors of one young man at various points in his many possible lives. While over quickly, I really enjoyed Gorogoa.“Gorogoa is a handcrafted, beautifully-illustrated story book, but it’s also a puzzle.” It really is a very carefully crafted game and I found the difficulty level just right – both pleasantly challenging and satisfying. There’s a creative mind-bending aspect to some of the puzzles – at the right zoom level panels can be visually combined in clever ways.

Unlike some games, touch-control is the most natural way to play Gorogoa the Switch Pro Controller is a little more cumbersome but still functions well overall. Either come recommended, but if you’re torn the iOS version is better value, particularly if you have an iPad or iPhone X you still get a good screen size. Having played through the game on both Switch and iOS, the two offer a similarly good experience, even the graphics are identical. While still recommend it at this price, on iOS it’s just £4.99 on iOS. On Switch the price is £11.99, and similar on Steam and GOG. It is a very short game, you can probably play through in 2-3 hours. There is nice low-key atmospheric background music, with the occasional touch of great audio for when the mysterious multicolour flying-coral-fish-being that subtly shows itself at intervals. Usually I’m against hint-modes, but the default-on one here just subtly indicates which parts of the images are interactive, so it is more of a interface helper.

I liked that you can just progress at your own pace, free of time constraints. Both of these are the source of many of the game’s wow moments, when you figure out the ingenious solution required to solve a puzzle.Ī little patience is required, both to spend a few minutes becoming accustomed to the gameplay mechanics, and throughout to think through some of the puzzles.

Panels often have a part cut-out, for example a doorway, which lets you overlay a panel over a different one to let yourself travel to a different place. Story panels can be positioned on the grid, and can interact with another panel when positioned correctly – for example forming a seamless double panel. You can explore a story panel, typically by clicking on object to zoom in, you can also zoom out and pan left/right/up/down in certain situations. There is a square split into a 2×2 grid, and each subsquare can hold a story panel. The hand-drawn visuals are charming and suit the game perfectly. Part unspoken story, part puzzler, you must piece together moments in time to progress. Gorogoa is a unique gem that I found highly memorable.
